THIS IS NOT A STUDIO WITH FOUR WALLS AND ONE SET UP 🤎
It's almost an acre of room to create, play, and follow the light.
The Russell Grounds is an outdoor creative studio and space in Conestogo, Ontario, created for photographers, content creators, brands, and anyone looking for a little more room to bring an idea to life.
But we don't really think of it as a collection of backdrops.
We want you to go on a journey.
COME IN.
THEN GO EXPLORE.
We say the same thing to everyone when they arrive.
We set it up. You come shoot.
We've created little scenes throughout the grounds that give you somewhere to start — but they're meant to be played in, moved around, and made your own.
Don't feel like you have to stay where we've put things.
Start near the gardens. Pull the wagon out. Stop at the swing. Move a chair under a tree because the light is better there. Wander past the barn. Let the kids run through the grass.
Eventually, make your way toward the beautiful tree lines and find the fairy forest tucked away inside.
There isn't a right way to use the property.
That's kind of the point.
WILDLY AT HOME....
This is especially important to us when families come to the grounds.
We don't want kids arriving somewhere beautiful and immediately being told not to touch anything.
Quite the opposite.
Touch things. Explore. Run. Play. Laugh.
Climb into the wagon. Swing a little too high. Sit in the grass. Pick up sticks. Go see what's hiding in the forest.
Because we know some of the best captures happen when children stop thinking about the camera

And when their kids are happy, parents can relax too.
The result isn't just a prettier backdrop for family photos.
It's an experience that gives you the opportunity to capture a family actually being a family.

The gardens change constantly.

And the barn, wood piles, pergolas, swings, vintage pieces, and little scenes throughout the property give you somewhere to start when you need it.
You can move through the grounds naturally rather than trying to keep everyone engaged in one spot.
And if you see something differently than we did?
Please do.
Move things. Restyle a scene. Bring a prop. Use something backwards. Find a corner we completely overlooked.
We created the space.
What you create here is yours.

NOTHING HERE STAYS EXACTLY THE SAME.
THE LITTLE THINGS MATTER TOO.
The Russell Grounds changes with the seasons.
Flowers bloom. Leaves turn. Gardens get a little unruly. Scenes move. New pieces arrive. Old pieces find completely different homes.
We'll create seasonal touches throughout the property, but we aren't interested in turning every corner into a heavily themed set.
The property itself is the backdrop.
So even when we add something new, we want it to feel like it belongs here.
And because we're still building The Russell Grounds in real time, there's a pretty good chance something will be different the next time you visit.
Beautiful photos are important.
So is everyone actually enjoying themselves while they're here.
Photographers and their clients have access to an indoor washroom during their booking — especially helpful when you're photographing families with little ones.
There's room to take a break, regroup, feed a baby, fix a dress, let someone pee, or just give a kid a minute before continuing.
Because needing a bathroom shouldn't be the thing that derails an otherwise great family session.

We have put together this acre for the storytellers, for the keepers of memories, and for those who know that family is a feeling you carry with you.
We want every human, of every age (and even our non human friends), to feel the love, enjoy their stay, and be able to be themselves.
